Poor Work Ethic Makes No Money

I am still waiting for the guy to call me back to fix my gate that was half repaired almost 6 weeks ago. The plumber who came to see our geyser did not bother getting us the quote he promised. The sliding door in my office leaks when it rains, as it is doing now, and the builder who put it in is just not interested in finishing off the job he started. I am waiting for the plaster guy to come in on Saturday and plaster a patch in a wall and fix a ceiling board in my house.

The norm has become the worst work ethic I have ever experienced. It is not isolated to a specific trade or industry or people group. All South Africans have become lazy, slack and down right rude when doing business. From airlines, banks, car rentals, accommodation, plumbers and builders. Sham on us for this lack of enthusiasm in our chosen careers.

Where do we find enthusiastic people to work for us?
I hired two Zimbabwians, William and Wellington from our local Xenophobia camp to break down a wall last weekend. They were so excited to get work and have a chance to get out and chat to someone. They wielded hammer, chisel and spade for half the day and never once complained, stopped or even rested. It was a pleasure to work with them and chat after a hard days work over lunch and tea.

What is it in the human spirit that we need to invoke this work attitude into our entrepreneurs and work force? Do we need to reach the bottom of the pit and the end of our rope before we realize that service and attitude needs to change. Hey, maybe Zuma will do us all a favour and ruin the country so that we too can work hard like the guys from Zim and DRC.
Lets get it together and make an attitude adjustment in our work ethic. Call the person back, deliver the quote, get back to finish the job. Just a smile will do a world of good. Try harder, lets get the job done.
